FAMOUS HORSE DEAD. The famous English racehorse Bayardo, news of whose death has been received, was at the stud for six years, and had a brilliant career on the turf i'l the colors of Mr '.'Fairlie." He should have had an unbeaten career, | but through bad riding in one race, interference in .two others, he was defeated three times. j On different occasions fabulous sums were offered for Bayardo, and if Mr' "Fairlie" had been prepared to sell the horse would doubtless have brought a world's record price, eclipsing tho 1 £40,000 given for Prince Palatine. Bayardo was bred by his owner, and was sired by Bay Ronald from Galicia, a mare who has a wonderful stud record. Her three sons, Bayardo, Lemberg, and Eastern won £83,500. Galicia, foaled in 1898, was by Galopin from Isoletta, by Isonomy. She might have ! been a good two-year-old, but for being j thrown up through accident. Just as! she appeared to be likely to win the j Exeter Stakes, she split a pastern, and was never much good on the turf after-! wards. She has proved a veritable i gold mine at tho stud, however, the winnings of Bayardo and Lemberg alone ! representing a fortune. Bayardo was undefeated as a two-1 year-old, when his great victories included tho New Stakes, in which he maao his first appearance, tho Sandown National Breeders' Produce Stakes, the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood, and tho Middle Park and Dewhurst Plates. He was beaten for tho Two Thousand Guineas, and the colt was also one of the worst sufferers in the scrimmage caused by Sir Martin's ■fall in Minoru's Derby, while his defeat as a four-year-old by Magic for tho Goodwood Cup was manifestly a fluke. These were his only failures, and after tho Derby fiasco he won consecutively 11 races as a three-year-old, including the Prince of Wales .Stakes at Ascot, the Eclipse, the St. Leger, and the Champion Stakes; while in his last season on the turf the , Chester Vase and Ascot Gold Cup were two of the four prizes won by him. Bayardo won 20 races of the total value of £44,500, an achievement which has only been beaten by Isinglass, Donovan, and Rock Sand. Bayardo was sire of Gay Crusader, winner of the Two Thousand Guineas in May and tho Derby recently. It has recently been discovered that a portion of the Wanganui Jockey Club's racecourse enclosure is public property, and it is indeed a moot point whether'a,public road (Ingestre Street) does not extend into the racecourse and practically right up to the racetrack. Tho discovery, says a Wanganui writer, was made in consequence of proposed court proceedings against a number of men, whom, it was alleged, had used a corner of the ground near the •present main gates for betting purposes. As a result the proposed proceedings against the men had to be abandoned. .Just what will be the otitcome of the discovery is hard to say, but the suggestion has been made that the Borough Council should get some back rent from the club for its newly-formed property. Apart from that aspect of the question, the matter is a somewhat serious one from the club point of view, and it may lead to some important developments.
