INGENIOUS GERMAN PRISONERS.

SHOUT-LIVED FREEDOM. Lieutenant Thelen, a German prisoner, escaped from Chelmsford Gaol. He had previously, made sensational escapes from Donington Hall in 1915 and from Maidenhead Camp in 1916. Thelon was on Saturday night apparently locked safely in his cell. A warder saw him and a companion asleep throughout the night, but really two dummies occupied the beds. Dummy padlocks were made of cardboard and replaced the picked locks of the cell. Thelen also picked the locks of the corridor and the gate of the gaolyard. He and his companion climbed the wall, but a cyclist pursued them and found them hiding chin-deep in water.
