The Bruce Herald MILTON, THURSDAY, JULY 2, 1908 THE GAS QUESTION.

A meeting of ratepayers is called for Saturday night, to consider the question of raising a loan of £6OOO to instal a gas plant for the Borough. We take it that it is generally recognised that we require better and more extensive lighting in the Borough both as public and private citizens, and there should not be two opinions as to the advisability as well as the necessity for something of a progressive nature being undertaken by our Borough Council. There is not the slightest chance of a loss accruing to the Borough on the project. If there is then Milton will be singular amongst the thousands of corporations which j supply gas to citizens. The experience of all corporations which have supplied gas to Boroughs of even a lesser population than Milton has shown us that there is always a margin of profit, and therefore no dissentient voice should be heard in protest against the proposal on Saturday night. Toko Farmers' Club committee meets this evening. Clearing sale at Mr Thos. Quill's tomorrow (Friday). Milton bowlers intend giving their lady friends a social some time in August. The Anglo-Welsh team defeated Hawke'a Bay at Napier on Wednesday by j 125pts to 3pts. The registrations for Kaitangata for the month of June wereßirths 3, marriages nil, deaths 1. We shall have more to say of this publication later on, meanwhile Tho Flag can be got from local booksellers. An Item for Parents.—Mr R. Milne has carried his resolution re reduction in " pen and ink money " at the Toko. High School (vide report on page 3), but tho present system will remain in force until September 30ch, and thereafter no further levies will be made until March 31st. Bowlers generally know how to recog« nise efficient services, and Mr R. Lockhart, caretaker of the Milton green, was mado aware of this fact at the annual meeting on Tuesday evening, when a "surprise" collection amongst members present realised the sum of JGI 10s 6d. Mr John Taylor, Milton, was judge at the Taieri Poultry Show last Saturday, and he reversed the decision of the Dunedin judge in the Wyandotte class and gave the championship to Mr P. C. Sinclair's bird (a hen). Mr F. L. M'Gregor's hen had beaten Mr Sinclair's in Dunedin, A (lady correspondent writes: —The Farmers' Club Ball Committee have decided, I believe, that the Coronation Hall must be scrubbed out before their ball takes place. Little Alma sang and danced pleasingly, and- Mr Shaw sang with great ac*' coptance. The pianiste, Miss Nordern, placed lively and appropriate airs during the wholo evening, and showed herself a musician of no mean order. It is a very long time since we have heard as good a pianoforte player in Milton. The company can be assured of a good welcome when they again visit Milton.

Responding to tho toast of •' Miliar. Borough Council" on Tuesday Or King said Milton was a Jong way be** hind other towns of the same size m New Zealand, Tho town was sound finan*. cially, and they had no debt, but there was nothing to show for the money ex* cept clean streets, Some considered they were going too fast when they talked of erecting a gas works. He maintained that Milton ought to be far ahead of what) it is. There was practically little drainage, no wator,' and no light; they were simply in the dark. They had only clean streets, whereas other towns in the North and South Islands had larger assets than Milton, although such towns were in debt. Personally he would like to be enjoying Bomo of the privileges arising from the establishment of any of these systems. Heconsidered they had a live borough oou oil, and that tho members were actuate d with a desire to do their utmost for tho welfare of the town. Rood's Stables Milton: See advfc.
