THE WINTER SHOW ESSAYS.
To the Editor, Sir,—lt is with great reluctance that I have to take to your valuable columns re she recent winter show essays. I have been prompted to do bo by the seemingly big advantage the country schools havo had over our local High School. In tho, first place the High School writers had to do their's undor a supervisor and Btraight from their rough notes, while it appears that writers from other schools by writing theirs at homo could have tho supervision and correction of their own parents. That Bimpiy means High Scnool versus Parents. Secondly, by reading the prize-list a person might be inclined to ask where the High School crack writers were, as the proportion of country winners was so large. Let your reader know that the reason for their absence was not for the want of talent, but that the High Sohool writers were writing under a severe handicap, and I would Advise the farmers' Oiub to make some rules before they are so kind to give prizes to children for essays next year whioh may perhaps bo the work of their parents.—i am, etc., Pupil, .
