Kaitangata Sports.

: m >__ (From Our Own Correspondent.) The thirteenth annual sports gathering of the Kaitangata Athletic Club was held on Monday, in a paddock kindly lent for the occasion by Mr G. Aitcheson. The climatic conditions were ideal. Despite the various counter-attractions the attendance was fully up to the standard of previous years, but the entries were not so numerous, with the' exception of tbe dancing and music events. The liberal manner in which the latter events had been catered for by the committee repaid the promoters by the excellence and keenness of the competition. Although the number of entries in wrestling was small, the quality was fully up to the usual standard. Tweedie's superior, condition enabled him to overcome all opposition in wrestling. ' R. Penman (New Zealand's champion) proved his superiority in the quoiting event. Owing to his very liberal allowance Borthwick, a local lad, won almost everything he started in. The rest of Jhe performances were nothing above the ordinary, and call for no comment. Following are the results : — . Quoiting, 21 yards — R. Penman scr. i,.W. Penman upts 2, J. Penman 2pts 3rd. Mr Weston, in the absence of the President, presided, and opened the proceedings by a few remarks. The programme provided at these annual gatherings is usually of a mediocre character, but that rendered on this' occasion was a notable exception, and proved to be the best of its kind yet held, for which in a measure credit is due to the pipers and other visitors who provided a lengthy, varied, and attractive programme to the great appreciation of the audience, who were not slow in testifying their approval by demands for the reappearance of the performers. Miss' LiddJe (Green. Island) the only lady singer, was highly appreciated in her rendering of " The Laird of Cockpen' and "John Gruinlie," and her brother's rendering of " The Little Hero " and "The Admiral's Broom" was greatly admired. One of the features of the programme wa^ the singing of a visiting piper (W..M'Kenzie) who has a sweet tenor voice, and sang " Bonnie Dundee," "Scots Wha Hae," and "The Cameron Men." The Clark brothers were greatly appreciated in their song " The M'Ginty's, the Seaside Washers;" and the local favorites (Barker and' Swannell) were to the fore in the comic, duet " A Job Lot" and negro absurdities. The song rendered by Mr Recce (a visitor) which was meant as a burlesque on the Salvation Army was not in good taste, and would have been better left out of the programme. A vote of thanks to perfor- . mers and the singing of " God Save the King " concluded a very successful entertainment. Afterwards a dance was held, Messrs Beath (violin) and Mantell (piano) providing excellent music. .
