There has been a considerable increase in the number of visitors to Akatofe Coast during the holidays, and it is apparent that the natural beauties of that locality are becoming more appreciated. The local bowling green presents a very busy appearance every evening at present, the competitions for the various prizes . being in full swing. ■ The second round for the championship and President's prize have been drawn, and must be played off by Jaa. 4th. Late last night we were informed lhat a five-roomed house at Glenlsdi Coast, belonging to Mr- R. Morgan, was completely destroyed by fire about five o'clock yesterday afternoon. Further particulars were not available when we went to press. Lieut. Duthie and Sergt. Farrell (Bruce Rifles) and some half-dozen members of the Kaitangatn. Rifles competed at North Otago Rifle Association's meeting, held at Oamaru on Monday and Tuesday, and succeeded in annexing a fair share of the prize-money, as follows : Private Smith £3 15s, Lieut. Duthie £3, Col.sergt. Bryce £l 15s, Sergt. Smaill 10s, Pte. Anderson ios. The Christ mas holidays passed off very quietly in the Milton district, most people ' contenting themselves with drives in the country. On Saturday evening the various shopkeepers made suitable displays of seasonable goods, and they report good business. Although there were a number who had apparently partaken too freely of the cup that cheers and inebriates, their roystering was of a mild and peacable nature, and none had to answer for their misdeeds. Special services were conducted in all the churches on Xraas day. There was a very large attendance at the Coronation *Hall on Wednesday evening on the occasion of the conceit -given by Caversham Industrial School Band.' The programme provided- was an excellent one of a varied nature, consisting of vocal and instrumental items, dumb-bell and rifle exercises, and the items met with hearty appreciation. ' The accompaniments were tastefully played by Miss Bryce, Mr Swindley, Surgeon Dentist, comer Octagon and Stuart street, Dunediq, can be consulted daily between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. All works at reduced fees. The choir sang the following carols, " Angels, from the realms of Glory," " Peaceful, gladsome Christmas morning," " A Merry Christmas to you all," " Good King Wenceslas," and "In Excelsis Gloria." Mr C. King sang the solo, " When Heaven sang to Earth." A string orchestra' under Mr Marryatt played an arrangement of the " Adeste Fideles " ; and the choir and congregation joined in sing"ing several Christmas Hymns. On Sunday (Christmas Day) the Holy Communion .was celebrated at 8.30 and at the II o'clock service. After the evening service, the music that was sung and played on the previous Friday evening was repeated, to the great pleasure of the congregation. The service throughout the day were taken by the vica r (Rev. J. C. Small), who preached sermons appropriate to the occasion, that in the morning being on " Why God became Man," and in the evening on " Good Tidings." Mrs Marryatt rendered valuable assistance ad organist. There were large congregations both morning and evening, and a very considerable number of communicants. The congregation had been invited to mak- special offerings to the Church, and a very gratify ing amount was collected. It should be mentioned that the Church was beautifully decorated with flowers, and thanks are due to al those who assisted to make the Christmas celebrations so enjoyable.
