Kaitangata School.

The break-up ceremony of the school for all children up to 3rd Standard took place at the school on Frid iy morning, in the presence of a large number of parents, mostly ladies. A j programme of action songs, &c. , was given by the infants. Mr Blackie (chairman of committee) briefly addressed the children, and Mr J. Allen, M.H.R. then presented th .; prizes to the successful scholars and made a few appropriate remarks and wished them every success during their holidays. The customary cheers were given at the conclusion by the children for the teachers, Mr Allen, and the committee. In the evening a varied programme was given by pupils in the higher sta.idu Is, tlure being a. large attendance. T.ho prOjjr.uu.ue was something similar to one gi en a iew weeks previously. The duet •*Crujket Bwvbee" by MiSs Nelly Bolhwick and Master Fred Telford, " Where are you go.n^ my pretty maid," by Elsie M'Fadden and >J aster Fred Telford, reciatation " Nevermore " by Mr C. R. Smith, the club swinging by «irls of the sixth and sevenths siandards, recitation "The careful messenger' Miss Annie Pennell, and *' The Firemin " Mr P. Bradley, were all worthy of especial mention. Tiie Rev. R. Scott- Allan gave a short address reminiscent of his early school days, which he showed wore a marked contrast tv> the privileges and facilities offered to children now, in the shape of prizes lor attendancj and merit, and painstaking and interested teachers, who all took an interest in the young under their charge. He concluded by entrusting them all to God's care and blessing, and wishing them a successful and enjoyable holiday and that they would return fully equipped for the duties that lay before them in the new year. Mr Blackie then asked Mr J. Allen, M.H.R., to present the prizes to successful scholars, stating that ,£2O, over and above special prizes, had this year been spent in books, which' included some handsome and well-bound volumes. Mr Allen expressed his pleasure at being amongst them once more, and said he had a presentation of a map to make to the school which had been presented by the Navy League, and which he had been asked to present on their behalf. He then, in the course of abrief but eloquent address, save a resume of the founding of the British Navy, and some of its fawous deeds up to the present time, and the object of the Navy League was to keep in the mind of their young the power of the navy and the necessity cf keeping up their power, as in these troublous times the surest way to command the peace of the world was by their striving to maintain the supremacy of the seas. He hoped the map would be an object lesson to them, and that it wotdd be pointed out to them what it meant to maintain the supremacy of the seas. During his travels he had found, strange to say, where the highest marks for education were attained, there was no system of prizes. He had a high appreciation of the value of education, and it should be every child's ambition to rise in the world. He thought it surprising to find on the continent how the children there valued education. The children in the colony had great facilities in that respect. and as they were the men and women of tiie future, upon them would depend the success of our country. He was glad to tell them that Parliament was taking steps to erect a training college for technical education. He exhorted them to value education for all it was worth, as it was the greatest boon and blessing that could be bestowed upon a child ; he also approved of the system of training the rifle cadets in our schools in the colony. He then presented the prizes complimenting the dux on his success, also wishing success to the boys who had achieved honors, but were away at civil service examination.
