Bruce County Council meets to-day. We have to acknowledge receipt of the New Zealand Insurance Co.'s calendar for 1905 from Mr W. Walker, agent, Milton. Th» People states it is reported that the proprietory of the city morning journal intends to sfart an evening newspaper. We understand that some of the local sports intend holding a sports gathering at Milton during the Easter holidays. As will be seen elsewhere in our columns Mr Reed intends to run his drag to and from the Glenledi Coast during the holidays. This should prove a boon to picnickers, as he intends to spare nothing to study the comfort of his patrons. The local schools' break-up ceremonies will take place as follows : Fairfax, to-morrow, at 2 p.m. at School ; Toko High School, at Coronation Hall on Thursday at 2 p.m. All parents and friends invited to attend. Mr. Swindley, Surgeon Dentist, earner Octagon and Stuart street, Dunedin, can be consulted daily between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. All works at reduced fees. Gas administered for painless extractions. Special terms for families. Write for particulars regarding your particular case. At a meeting of the Otago Agricultural and General Laborers' Union held on Saturday evening, several members spoke strongly against the action of the bakers in retaining the present high price of bread. After a general discussion it was moved and unanimously carried " That this union protest most against the action of the bakers in raising the • price of bread." We- are informed that this • question will be further discussed at the annual meeting. It would appear that, in the opinion of the Trustees of the Ota^o Benevolent Institution, the cost of living in the country has annually become much cheaper, since the necessaries of life began to rise in price. For instance some time ago an old resident of Bruce, who is totally unable to look after or provide for himself, was in receipt ot the magnificent sum of four shillings per week ; in view however, of the man becoming older and more unfit to work, the Trustees have now reduced his allowance to three shillings per week ! It is to be hoped that the country people will wake up some day and object to the money they are paying for Charitable Aid purposes being mostly given to keep up State pauperised people in the large towns. The ever favorite Taylor-Carrington Co. will make their appearance in the Coronation Hall to-night in the famous drama "Justice at Last. " The following paragraph speaks for itself. — "A wonderfully interesting drama this, and one that does not depend, as many other sensation plays do, on scenic effect and stag* accessories to make ir, effective. The plot is powerful and clearly defined ; the language non-stagey yet telling ; the serious interest natural yet convincing ; whilst the comedy relief causes roars of laughter without being in the least degree vulgar or suggestive. 'Justice at Last' is undoubtedly one of the best plays the Taylor-Carrington Company have : presented during their tenancy of the Theatre Zorilla." — 'The American,' Manilla, P.I. Our Kaitangata correspondent writes : — The Kaitangata Cricket Club Jare going to make an appeal to the public for their patronage on Friday evening next. As the Cricket Club do not often appeal to the public they consider they are within bounds by doing so on this occasion. Apart from the object cf assisting the Cricket Club funds, a startling innovation is goint; to be introduced on this occasion in the programme in the shape of a Christy Minstrel entertainment. In the first part there will be a circle overture with the usual corner and funny business ; in the second part it will be varied. As good talent is assisting, and no effort is> being spared to make the programme attractive, the club trusts this new idea of local entertainment will meet with the success it deserves. As ladies are assisting, the public can rest assured that no pains will be spared to give them satisfaction in every way. The only thing needful to complete success 1 is a bumper house on the occasio 1.
