: " ■' ♦ (Feom Our Own Corkesfondeht.) During the past week another case of scarlet fever has broken out in our midst, the patient being a young man lately arrived from Duaedin. He was in the employ of Mr Jno. M'Kay, Club Hotel, and on developing symptoms of the dreaded malady ne was removed from the hotel to a camp erected in the Reserve, above the pound, and a nurse put in charge to attend to him. Kaitangata can boast for once in its existence of an hospital, such as it is. A general meeting of the Otago Coal Miners Union was held in the Union rooms on Wednesday evening to make arrangements about the annual picnic. A proposal, emanating from Mr Lee, General Manager of N.Z. Coal & Oil j Co., that the money collected for the picnic by the men and the amount furnished by the Company be put to the ' erection of an hospital in Kaitangata was considered impracticable, and a and a resolution was carried that the j picnic be held as usual at Mt. Stuart at the end of February or the beginning of March, the date to suit the Government train arrangements The Presbyterian Church Sunday School picnic was held at Smith's Bush, Stirling, on Friday last and a very enjoyable day was spent. The picnickers left by the train at about 10 o'clock and returned by train at 7 o'clock in the evening. The weather was perfect and both young and old seemed to make the best of it. The postponed match between Castlehill and Kaitangata cricket teams took place on Saturday on the Recreation Ground. The weather was rather showery and cold, but nevertheless some good form was shown with both bat and ball. Castlehill batted first j and only managed to put up 26, E. Jones (9) and VV. Jones (4) being the highest scorers. Kaitangata put up 65 in their venture and thus won by 39 runs. Fletcher (34) Hill (7) Duncan (7) played good cricket. For the winners Lavery, 4 wickets for 2 runs Fletcher, 6 wickets for 12 did good execution, weile for the losers Aitcheson took 5 wickets for 31, Jones 2 wkts for 1 and Dr. Fitzgerald 2 for 23,
