Cricket

The Kaitangata Cricket Club opened their season on Saturday afternoon when a match, married versus single, was played off. The weathet was excellent and there was a large attendance of spectators, not a few ladies being amongst the number. The proceedings were greatly enlivened by the. Kaitaogata Brass Band who marched in 1 style to the grounds, and played several lively selections in aa efficient manner throughout the afternoon. The Club may compliment themselves upon the excellent wicket which they have laid down, and although the outlield w;t-s somewhat rough and uneven, somewhat to the vexation of the fielders, the ground as a whole being well sheltered by trees was good. Some of tba players who had been practising on tni turf pitch found to their gritf thit the mattiug provided a triif} and faso wicket. Seeing that this is tbe firs'* occasion on which several of the Kaitangata youth have faced good bowliu}-, their exhibition of batting was not tv bad. The ti?lding of both t^ams was very poor, but particularly that of tbe single men in the second inning.-'-There was too much tumbling a!I rouijd and saverdl easy catches wcie iniaytd Owing to delay in fixing ihe dale < i the match, the ladie.s were not inviitd to give a luncheon oa the ground, bm had tbe invitation been extended toeri; is no doubt the ladies woald have com-) forward handsomely. The marri> d men won the tosa and sent rhe aiut.lo men into bat. Stutopn were drawn at 6 30 p.m., the game thus being drawn. The following are the >.g >:es : — ■ SINGLE MEN. — lafc lonhtge.
