© (From Our Own Cokrk.spondej^t. ) SCHOLASTIC. The monthly meeting of the Scbor \ Committee was held in the Technical classroom on Friday. Present — Mr Alex. Blackie (chairman), J. Hielop, P. Welsh, J. Campbell, A. Admiston, ! F. T. Poole, W. Shaw, J. M'Corley, and H. Brown, secretary. The mhmtes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The head-master reported that the ! present number on the roll was 199 ! boys and 181 girls, total 380. The ! average attendance for the past month was 347 ; while that for the quarter ending the week would be 331, or ten more than the number required to maintain the present staff. Instructor Hanna paid his third monthly visit on the 6th inst., and spent the whole day with the classes ! and teacher- in connection with the ! teaching of physical drill, J The secretary reported that Dr Fitzgerald had generously donated £1 i for the purchase of Indian clubs for the school. On the motion of Mr Poole, seconded by Mr M'Corley, it was decided, that the committee procure Indian clubs to the value of 30s. — Carried. One of the committee reported that owing to a fire caused by a boy, a number of trees at the south-eastern part of the plantation had been burned. Moved by Mr M'Corley, seconded by Mr Poole, that a notice board warning trespassers be procured and erected at the plantation in school grounder Carried,

On the motion of Mr Poole, seconded by Mr Edmiston, the Secretary was instructed to write to the father oi the boy who had raised the fire.— Carried. The Secretary was instructed to write thanking Dr Fitzgerald, Messrs G-eorge Aitchison, Mr Uren, also to the head-master for their services. Mr Hislop moved, and Mr Camp- j bell seconded, that Messrs Blackie, M'Corley, Poole and the mover be appointed a committee to inspect plantation in school ground with a view to thinning out the treeß, and report to next meeting. — Carried. A letter was received from tbe Education Board intimating that Inspector Goyen aud Bosden would examine the school on or about the 10th October. Mr M f Corley moved, and Mr Welsh seconded, that the school be closed for a week after the examination. Mr Hislop moved as an amendment that the school be closed for three dajs. On being put to the meeting five voted for the amendment and four for the motion. — The amendment was i therefore declared carried. The Chairman reported that the matter of judging the sewmg had been attended to. Mesdames Fitzgerald, Pairmaid and Hitchon had kindly consented to act. — Agreed to. . The following accounts were passed for payment : Mr Hewitt, £3 Os 8d ; Mr Burleigh, 9a ; Mr Sinclair, 6s. Mr Poole reported that the headmaster had drawn his attention to a leak in the upper cistern which would require to be attended to at once. — It was agreed that the matter be left in the hands of the Works Committee. On Thursday evening the members of the Church of Christ met together for the purpose of spending a social evening along with the members of the Bible Band, and to bid farewell to Mrs Blackie and her daughter, Miss Aggie Blackie. Mr Cairns occupied the chair, and during his opening remarks reminded ikose present tbat Mrs and Mies Blackie had since their connection with the church always been faithful and consistent members. He thought he only expressed the sentiments of all present when he said that they were sorry that the church was about to loose such valuable assistants. The Chairman then called upon Mr Anderson to perform the very pleasing ceremony o presenting Miss Aggie Blackie with a very handsome Bible. Mr Anderson, on behalf of the Bible Band, remarked that Miss Blackie had acted in the capacity of secretary since its inauguration, and had proved | herself to be a valuable acquisition to the Band. The speaker hoped that she would esteem this small token of their respect by searching its pages carefully. After a few suitable recitations had been gone through by several members of the Band, the members joined in saying farewell to Mrs Blackie and her daughterwishing them bappineßS and prosperity in their new home. On tbe evening of Wednesday the members of the Kaitangata Miners' Union held a meeting in Mr Poole's hall when it was decided that a picnic should be held on the upper recreation ground on Labor Day, October 11. A committee of twelve was selected from the members present to make the necessary arrangements for same ENTERTAINMENT. The entertainment, provided by the Connor Bros., on Thursday and Friday evening was attended with but a limited amount of success, especially on Thursday evening, the attendance being anything but satisfactory, On Friday evening our local Brass Band was in attendance, consequently the performance was patronised by a larger audience. On Wednesday Mr Thomas Crowe and Miss Emily Brown were joined in wedlock. The marriage ceremony took place at the residence of the bride's parents. The Rev. Mr Elliott officiated, and as is generally the case in connection with a marriage, the newly-married pair were tECSied. during the evening to a tintinabulation It was oniy after a considerable distribution of cakes, &c, that the performers came to the conclusion that the instrument should be put by for a future occasion.
