It was too Exciting

«. A reporter, who recently went from London to take charge of a country newspaper and give his tired brain a rest, has come back to town and settled again in his old position. ' The country is all right, ' ho declared, ' but there is too much happening, and I came back to find a more restful atmosphere. ' There were two papers in the town, aud I had to watch the other. Both were published on .Fridays, and we could not afford to let the other fellows beat ua in the way of news. The issue looked all right, but the proprietor grumbled because we missed the death of a oow on a farm three miles away ; nor would he be consoled when I showed him that the opposition had altogether overlooked an accident to a goods train which had provided two columns of copy for our paper. Then a subscriber stopped because his name had be^n left out of the attendance list at the public meeting, and another man threatened to stop because we would not publish a libellous letter of his. 'We did not announce that the baker had lost ten loaves of bread from his dilivery cart, and there was a howl that made me tired of the country. 'The third week settled the business. We were ready to go to press when the proprietor rushed in, greatly excited and announced that he had a nice little piece of news. We lifted off oue form and waited while the old man wrote out hie paragraph, and this is what I had to kill one of my small pet editorials for : • "We notice that George W. Haskins is making preparations to improve the appearance of his cosy home. We observed Mr Haskins in close conversation with Mr Smith, the painter, whose advertisemsnfe appears iq another column, and learn that he will have his residence painted 9 light buff, with white trimmings and green shutters, This will greatly enhance the apueajance of our town. Others should do likewise." 1 Then I decided to come back home. The life was too excitiog and feverish.'
