A TELEPHONE WITH "SOFYS."
A well-to-do bnt unsophisticated farmer from one of the border counties was in Leeds lately, »nd brought with him his wife and daughters to tee the sights and do some shopping. Among otber places they visited the draper's, and, after wandering around for a while, the party came to a stop near the elevator. One of the daughters was the first to discover tho elevators moving silently up and down, receiving and discharging their cargoes. She pulled her father's coat sleeve, and in a tone that was audible to the clerks in the neighbourhood, asked : "What's that, paw — that thing going np and .own with sofys m it ?" The old man gave the elevator a long, calm, icrutinising stare, and exclaimed : " True as you live, it's a telephone ! The first t ever see _!"
