Draughts Match

* MILTON V. LAWRENCE. The return match between Lawrence and Milton was played off at the Town Hall, Lawrence, on Wednesday afternoon. Mr L Burn was captain of the Milton contingent, and Mr P. Skinner acted in the sama capacity for Lawrence. Appended are the scores : — Milton Lawrence

After the match the teams proceeded to Mr Bruce's private hotel, where an exce lent spreai was provided. Mr Skinner said that though the Lawrence draught players had now been beaten twice by the Milton players they had hopes of reversing this state of things on some future occasion. He thought it would be advisable to defer holding the next contest until winter. He was sure all the members of the Lawrence Draughts Club were very pleased that they had come in con'acb with the Milton players ; and he was of opinion that more friendly contested g-vmes than those between Liwrence and Milton had never been played. He did not grudge the visitors their victory ; no doubt at the pre-ent time they were better players in Tokomairiro, from which place a large team of fourteen had been sent ; but when they next met he hoped some of the Lawrence men would have acquired more knowledge of the game, Mr Lewis Burn, on behalf of the Milton team, heartily thanked the Lawrence Club for the kindly reception the visitors had received Sp-aking of the match, he said he was, of course, gratified with the result, especially when he took into consideration the fact that until a month or two back some of his men had only a very elementary knowledge of the game Mr D. M'Gill drew attention to the faot, that in the annual town v. country matches held in Dunedin, the country invariably suffered defeat. This wa , he thought, m inly attributable to :*he way by which the country teams were composed there was no supervision over t heir selection. IJe thought it would be a good idea if the captains of the various country teams had the selection of the team to represent the country in the annual fixture referred to— (applause), — which was generally held about the time of the winter show. If such an arrangement was arrived at it would give an impetus to the game. Mr Skinner, referring to Mr M 'Gill's suggestion thought it would be practicable. He mentioned that at Gore there were four or five players who would hold their own with a similar number of Dunedin exponents of the game.
