— r "* ° . . The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held in the Athenaeum on^. Wednesday evening, ■when the -Mayor (Mr W. Moore); Crs Lockhart, , Sprosen, Scanlan, McGill, and McLeod were present. The minutes of the previous regular meeting and also of a special meeting held on August 31 were read and-con-firmed. The Clerk notified that Messrs Sprosen, Littlejohn, and Stewart, had been returned without opposition as representatives 'for east, south, and west wards. COBBESPONDENCE. From Geo. Keed asking permission to cut a drain across footpath, the work to he under the inspection of the dayman. Moved by Cr Lockhart, seconded by Cr McGill, that Mr Reed's application be granted. — Carried. From Mrs Bennetto, pointing out tHit a nuisance existed close to her door from a piggery, and that the offensive smells were enough to cause sickness. She asked that the Council would endeavour to do something to rectify the matter. Moved by Cr Sprosen and seconded by Cr Lockhart, that the letter be referred to the Inspector of with power to act. — Carried. GEPTBBAL. resolution was passed empowering Council to over-draw their account at the bank in accordance with section 201 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1886, and the Mayor was authorised to have the resolution forwarded to the manager of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand. Accounts amounting to .£24 17s 4d ■were passed for payment as'follows : — dayman's salary, £11 os; Bbitce Hbbald, £2 9»; G. Bowie, £11 3s 4d. An estimate of probable receipts fend expenditure for ensuing year was laid before the Council by the Clerk. It showed that a rate of Is 3d in the £ was necessary to carry out the work ß proposed. In connection with the foregoing, Cr Scanlan gave notice of motion as follows :■ — i( - That ifc is the intention of this Council at its next meeting to levy a general -rate of Is 3d in the £ upon all rateable property as appearing on the Valuation Eoli for the year commencing Ist April, 1899, to the 31st March, 1900 — BUch rate being payable on the Ist day of November,, 1899.'* Besolved that the dayman be authorised to effect the necessary repairs to the weighbridge, which, it was pointed out by Cr Lockhart, required permanent improvement. In regard to the erection of a post in the right-of-way from Union to Ajax streets, the Mayor stated that he had had a number of complaints from parents, ladies, and others as to the danger consequent on vehicles being driven rapidly down the right-of-way across the footpath. He thought it would be better to stop wheel traffic altogether, and did so lifter consulting the Council's solicitor. Cr Sprosen thought the Mayor had done quite, right, 'as he himself bad seen several , narrow escapes. If ordinary care, was taken there would be no need to stop traffic. The Council concurred in the action of the r ' : Maydr in having the post erectedj. and a resolution was carried to that^efEec't. This being - all the business the w|.ouncii adjourned.
