A two-roomed cottage adjoining the White Harfc Hotel, Marton, was destroyed by fire at an early hour this morning. The" sole occupant was an elderly man named Hewitt, an old Wanganui identity, who perished in the flames. The police immediately took steps to capture them, and by 6 o'clock the two runaways were again in charge of the goaler. An artesian well was recently beiug sunk in Christchurcb, and, when near completion, one of the men engaged on tbe work poured a few handfuls o' brass filings down the pips. On wator being struck, the filings came to the top, and the other woikmen, who were not " in the know," imagined for the moment that they had discovered a veritable goldmine. A new remedy for tub rculosia has, according to a news i.m received by the San Francisco mail, been developed iv France, and reported to the State Department at Washington. Tbe treatment was called to the attention of the Academy of Medicine by Dr Meiidal. It consists in a daily injectio&Tfinto the bronchial tubes of essence of eucalyptus, thymme, and cinnamon, held in a solution of olive oil. The oil, in descending, comes in contact with the walls of the tubes anrl the upper parts of the lungs. Tbe gas. set free saturates the air iv the lungs, and acts on the mucous membrun?. A strange freak of a somnambulist ia reported from Victoria Barracks, Portsmouth. About midnight recently a private of the 2nd Shropshire Light Infantry got out of bed in his sleep* loaded his rifle with ball cartridge, ar.d fir6d it off iv a barrack-room fall -of sleeping soldiers. The bullet lodged iv the ceiling, and so nobody waa hurt> the man was at once arrested, and an investigation as to how he obtained the ammunition was begun, with the result that a number of rounds of ball cartridge were throvn out of the window by men who were afraid to be fouad in possession of them. It is a punishable offence for these men to have ball cartridges about them. It is believed that the men got the ammunition by eecretiag it when at musketry practice* Owing to several deaths recently, wbich it ia believed might have been obviated by proper medical attendance, a strong feeling has been raised in the State of New Jersey against what is called Christian Science. At the funeral of Mrs Porcella, the Rev. George Francis, paster of the First Presbyterian Church, said: — "The lavs of tbe universe are inexorable, and to violate or disregard them is to invite disaster. I desire to point out to you the essential immorality of that grotesque and pagan teaching to which our attention hae been directed — that gross perversion of the Bible which ia called Christian Science. Deception lies at the heart of it. It teache3 its votaries to cry pnace when there is no peace. It teaches them to declare that they are in health when they are really suffering from disease. In its soul thia I grotesque and incoherent system is an insult to human intelligence, to good morals, and to God.
