M, Demange made a powerful clos. ing speech. In dealing with the evidence, he said that the generals were biased to such an extent that fchey had accepted probabilities as proofs of guilt. He assumed that they had acted in good faith in accusing Dreyfus, bufc attacked M. Cavaignac and declared thafc the judges were not entitled to oonviofc uuless Dreyfus's guilt was beyond the shadow of doubt. The court -mr.rtial, oy five votes to two, condemned Dreyfus, and sentenced him to 10 years' detention in a fortress for treasonably communicating with a foreign Power the documents enumerated in tbe bordereau undsr extenuating circumstances. ! Dreyfuß, ignorant of the court's decision, waited in an ante-room. M. Labori, his counsel, entering, tearfully embraced Dreyfus, and murmured that he waa condemned. The clerk of the court read the verdiofc to him in tha presence of the guard, after ifc had been read to the court. The French people were eager for the verdict, bufc there was no disturbance. Madame Dreyfus displayed admirable fortitude. The German Emperor, in the interests of justice aud humanity, ordered the " Official Gaz.tte ' to reiterate that Germany had no relations, either directly or indirectly, with Dreyfus.
