Tokomairiro Farmers' Club

The usual meeting of the above Club waa held in the Council Chambers j last Thursday : Present— Messrs J. Tough (vice-president) in the chair, D. Tweedie (secretary), W. Farquharson, P. Porter, Jas. Grey, Jno. FarquharBon, Jas. Aitcheson, Jas. Inglis, W. W. Hall, M. Finch, T. Falconer, W. Thornton, G. Martin, W. Moore, J. Allison, W. Drinnan, R. Ferguson and J. Norrie. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A letter from the Tapanui Farmers' Club held over for consideration from last meeting re the price of bags and commission on grain was dealt with. Mr Inglis said that the Tapanui Club did not state which way they thought would be the most efficacious to cope with the difficulty. He moved that the local Club operate with the Tapanui Club in any action they take in regard to the matter, seconded by Mr Farquharson and carried. Mr Tweedie said that Mr R. B. Paul, North Branch, had won a prize of 10s for potatoes at the Winter Show held in 1898, but had never received the prize money. The Secretary stated that he spoke to tho Club's late secretary, Mr Campbell, who informed him that through some mistake the money had not been paid. Mr Tough asked if there was not any rule in regard to prize money being claimed after a certain time. Mr Tweedie said that in all probability Mr Paul had applied for the money before, and it was only fair that it should be paid to him. Mr Norrie moved and Mr Aitcheson seconded that Mr Paul be paid the money. — Carried. In regard to the tenders which had had been called for the grazing of the Club's paddock, the Secretary stated that he had received only one tender from J. Wyber for £5 10a. Mi Falconer moved that the tender be not accepted, and fresh tenders be called, seconded by Mr Farquharson. Mr ffrey moved as an amendment that the matter be left to the chairman and secretary to deal with. Mr Tweedie said that he had been authorised by Mrs Brady to offer on her behalf 30s per acre for the ground Mr Inglis then moved as a further amendment that Mrs Brady's offer be accepted. Seconded by Mr Moore. Mr Grey withdrew his motion, and on being put Mr Inglis' amendment was carried by 12 votes to 5. Moved by Mr Allison and seconded by Mr Falconer that a committee consisting of the President, Mr Moore, and Mr Inglis be elected to look after the ground for the ensuing year. In regard to the Walking Show, Mr Grey moved and Mr Farquharson seconded that the show be held on < October 10th.— Carried. It was agreed that the entry money be the same as usual (53). Mr Inglis asked if there was no possibility of getting some good entire horses from the outside districts to attend the Walking Show. He said that better horses could be seen in Tokomairiro 20 years ago, and thought that if a committee of two or three local farmers were to attend the Dunedin Walking Show no doubt they could induce some of the owners there to send their horses to this district. After some discussion on this matter it was moved by Mr Ferguson and seconded by Mr Moore that a committee consisting of the President, Vice-President, Mr Frazer, aod Mr Allison attend the Dunedin Walking Show with a view to getting strange horses to travel the district. — Carried. Mr Jas. Grey moved that the President, Vice-President, and Secretary arrange with the Eettce Herald for printing and advertising for the year. — Seconded by Mr Ferguson. Mr Geo. Martin moved that tenders for printing be called for the year. — Seconded by Mr Thornton. The amendment was carried by 12 voteß to 6. Motion lost. Moved by Mr Inglis and seconded by Mr Norrie that the Summer Show be held on November 22. — Carried. The work of appointing judges and stewards for the ensuing year was then proceeded with.
