On Wednesday Mr Fitz Anderson departed this life. Deceased was an old resident of Kaitangata^ being here in the early days. He could, therefore, give a very livid description of the gradual growth of the; coal metropolis of the south. Deceased was interred in the. old cemetery on Friday. The Milton Roman clergyman officiated during the past week. We are enjoying splendid weather, and the young grass is springing up beautifully, much to the satisfaction of cattle owners. Sunday was exceptionally cold, and the transferring process from spring to winter did not seem to be appreciated by many of our resi- ' dents as the streets were minus their ■ usual number of Sunday strollers. Of late the bicycle craze seems to have taken hold of our young men and young ladies. Bicycles are arriving at Kaitangata almost daily, no less than eight arriving one day last week. 1 think all the makers are pretty well represented, and the rumor is current that very soon there will be a club formed. The whole breadth of Eddystone street is required at the present time by many of the riders for the pedalling of their machines. The craze is even attacking many of the older residents, and it is not an uncommon sight to see a grand-dad astride of a bike, while the machine is kept in position by one on either side. I hear that some of our married ladies are persuading their husbands that it is splendid evening exercise for those who have been attending to domestic duties during the day. I . believe that I would have one myself only I am very much afraid that I would be oftener in the ditch than on the bike. It must be gratfying to readers of the Herald to note that the road adjoining Taratu is, receiving the attention of our County councillors. It is going to be repaired by having a coat of gravel. Pedestrains during spells of rainy weather will now be able to proceed along that particular part of the road without being obliged to jump across mud pools as was formerly the case. Our young people who enjoy themselves during the summer months at picnics held at Ormiston Bush will be quite delighted as that particular part of the road was almost impassabe if a wet day preceded the picnic. I think I only express the sentiments of the above class when I thank the Council for the decision arrived at in that particular direction. The Christian Endeavor in connection with the Presbyterian Church is a real live institution, and very often on Friday evenings the greater part of' the members, with their president may be seen at the crossing, and their voices heard to advantage in a few appropriate hymns, or holding forth the words of truth to those who care to listen. The other Friday evening I noticed amongst their number Mr John Burn (senr.) now an aged man, but he seems to have lost none of the tact he possessed in days gone by, and is still able to deliver the gospel message in an intelligent and straightforward manner.
