I m w— (Fkom Ocr Own Correspondent.) Monday. Th? Athletic Society held a meeting on Friday ovening which was capitally attended, The President, Mr Algi^, < ccupted the chair, ihe programme was gone through and finally adopted. The amount to be diaI tributed will be about .£7O so that it | will be seen the Athletic Sports are not bej hind any former gatheiings of the sort here, An innovation in the shape of a bicycle competition is added. As there are satisfactory prizse attached there is aur« to be good competition, and a crowd attracted, ihe Games this year will be htld on Boxing day instead of as formerly on Christmas D»y but whether the change of days will prove a j success remains to be seen. Under the present Licencing Committee the Act ia sure to be more stringently applied and there perhaps would have been tome difficulty in getting the necessary rtfieehment on Christmas day as it is one of the close days for hotels. 1 his I believe was the principal reason for tho change, the sooiety being desirous of avoiding any complications, in the evening there is to bo a pUin dreßS ball fur all and sundry. The programme will probably be ready next week and oan be had from the secretary. Tne school examination papers were brought before the echoo! committee on Friday night and notwithstand ng the fact that it waa their first public appoarance a contemporary had a report in some week or two ago, although it was deoided a year ago not to publish a record of the exam, ihe report in question proved to be totally inaccurate. Your Own madu applica' ion to the committee to have the report printed but owing to the former resolution the application had to refused, co that I am unable to give details, At the meeting of commttiee exception was taken to the newspaper report which had appeared. Mr Car> rutherß who attended the examination on : behalf of the committee spoke very favorably of the new Inspector, Mr Fitzgerald (who by the way is father of our chairman), and congratulated the Board on their choice of Mr Petrie's successor. The child:6n too seemed to take kindiV to him. Mr R. Crabb, Temperance Lecturer, is : announced to give a lec;ure here on the first Thursday iv tho Maeouic Hall. The monthly meeting of the School Committeo was held in the Athei.-iojm laßt Friday. P.cs.nt, Dr Fitzgerald (chair), Messrs Carruthers, Blackie, rjuoter, Ramsay, and Raynes. Tne minutes were read and adopted aud the Head Master reported aa follows:— No. on roll, boys 233, girls 203, 1 total -141. Avoragu attendance, boys 190, | girls 11)0—306. For the present week tho ; attendance reached 375. Several defaulters j were reported i The report of the examination was read j from the iieud Teacher and waa considered i so far saiifactory that the clerk was instructed to convey to the Head Teacher the committee's satisfaction thereat, as moved by Mr Raynes, seconded by Mr Cirrutherß and carried. Mr Raynes moved and Mr Hunter seconded that the secretary write Constable P.-ol to the eff-jet that the committee intend to leave the truancy business in abeyance in the meantime — Carried. ln£ Planet Junr. Machines —An interesting tiial of the Pianet Junr. Horse Hoe, plough acd cultivator, and also of a garden wheel hoc took place on Friday afteruoou at Mr Nome's farm and was conducted by Mr E, A. Sandford the traveller for the mukere, Messrs S. C Allen and Co. Philadelphia, with Mr Nimmo, of Nimmo and Blair, their Otago agents, in attendance* The attendance of farmers waa not large but those present expressed great satisfaction with tha reeult of the trial. The maohine is plough shaped, very light and of abnormal strength. The weight is under 70ib and yst with horse attached it tv ns up a furrow a foot deep and almost any width. By altering the guage the furrow can be reduced to any dimension. By changing the plate the machine oan be made to hoe, and further alteration converts it into a plain J cultivator. Then by substituting a small heavy roller for some ofthe plates the farrow is oovtred and rolled flit. The number of uses to whioh the machine oan be put is really astonishing. This was exemplified by Mr -andford's experiments. A hand wheel hoe for garden work was also exhibited and was highly commended. 'J his maohine oan, by varying the attachments, be also put to a variety of purposes. Mr Sandford saya ho has had a very good time with the machines since he arrived in New Zealand. Some fifty have been sold at the Taieri and a great many in the North Island. Mr J. A« Duthio bought one of the garden machines and we hear two or three of the others have been aold in Tokomairiro. Horrible Cbime.— Aooording to 'The Times' a bailiff on the Kinmare Estate, Killarney, was found guilty of wilful murder by a oorocer's juiy for kicking to death aa oid woman named M*K.enn.«, fl«r age wm
