Au amusing story comes from the "Wairarapa. The farriers of that Valley formed a union recently, but their new scale of charges did not suit th 6 farmers of the district, who formed a company with the object of becoming there own village blacksmiths and saving money. A breach, wide as the poles asunder, ensued ; a labour difficulty of the worst kind loomed in the dim but pregnant future, and both sides sternly resolved that the right cause should triumph. The farmerfarriers required a manager, and ad* vertised accordingly (as wise men invariably do) . Twenty-six applications were received, and among them, strange to say, was one from the chairman of tho Farriers' Union. It is not anticipated that he will be unanimously elected. In the Australasian " Aulus " tells the following amusing story : — There are numerous stories of lucky accl* dents which have led to the discovery of gold. In the north-west of Western Australia a find was made very simply. A boy took up a stone to throw at a crow, and found that it was a lump of quartz containing gold. The resident magistrate, who was of a fussy, excitable temperament, as soon as he beard of this occurrence, rushed post-haste to the telegraph office, called out — " Quick, a telegraph form ; important message for Government," and dashed off his despatch at once to the Colonial Secretary. An hour afterwards he received the reply. He opened it with a gratified smile, knowing that it would contain the Minister's thanks for his zeal in sending the good news so promplty. To his horror he read as follows : — " The Colonial Secretary to the R.M., Blankville. — You don't say so! What became of the crow ?" He rushed back to tho telegraph offico more frantically thau before and asked for a " repeat." He got it, and found that his official despatch read as follows : — " A boy picked up a stone to throw at a crow." In his flurry he had left out all aboul the gold.
