FOOTBALL NOTES.

UNIVERSITY V. MILTON. A match between teams from tho above clubs was played at Milton on Saturday afternoon. The atmospheric elements were all that could be desired for a game aud the ground was in splendid order. The University played a combination of Ist and 2nd fifteen players, their backs being principally Ist ; while the local team suffered through the absence of some of their usual players. In size, the visitors had the advantage, while the teams were somewhat equalised "Tn weight. With such odds against them, the most sanguine barrackers of the home team expeoted a big defeat, but in this direction they ware wrong, although not able to avert tbe Email majority of a unit score against them the Club showed consistent form, and a decided improvement in their usual style of play. Tho 'Varsity team arrived by the forenoon express, and, after lunch at Mr F. Grant's Milton Hotel at the invitation of the local team, they togged up and proceeded to the ground, where play commeoced at 2.30 p.m. Rutherford, the 'Varsity captain, won the toss, and the Royal blues ('Varsity colors) lined out with the wind in their favor, and the sun at their backs. Reid captained the home team (orange and blacks), and started the play by a good kick off againat the wind. Neither side appeared to gain any advantage, the ball travelling up aud down the field at a great pace, the dribbling rushes of the Milton forwards being equalised by the long kicks of the opposing backs. Within three minutes of half-time, M'Brearty, for the Royal blues, scored near the corner flag. The kick at goal was a failure, aud the first spell closed with Varsity 1 point, Milton nil.

The wind, which had favored the 'Varsity in the first spell now died away, and, on changing endp, the orange aud blacks were denied this advantage. The home team now pulled themselves together, and by fast following up Parlane scored close to the posts. The kick at goal was entrusted to Porter, who landed the desired goal, and the score now stood Milton 3 points, 'Varsity 1. The blues now had a turn at the offensive, and from a passing run, in whioh Simmers, M'llroy, aud Porteous took part, the latter scored behind the posts, Whioh Anderson converted into a goal,

Time was shortly after called, the score being — 'Varsiry, 4 points, Milton, 3. In the University team some brilliant play was shown by the backs. Anderson, M'Brearty, M'llroy, aud Rutherford were the most prominent. Of the forwards Campbell, on the line out, did some smart play, while Porteous, Simmers and Birss did good work. The forwards of the home team showed good form. Coombe played with much dash and spirit, giving the opposing backß a good deal of trouble at tackling. J. Murray, Reid and Martin were all there in gaining ground by good following up, while P. Comer worked like a Trojan all through. The backs did not play up to their usual form their work being spoilt by the smart play of their opposing halves. Parlane put in some effectual play with short runs and punting. Grant, at half, also played well* The match was played in the most friendly spirit, and was witnessed by a large crowd of spectators, among whom the players were pleased to notice a good proportion of the fair sex.
