THE DANGERS THAT THREATEN US .

We take from Dr Lyman Abbott's sermon in Plymouth church, January 6, 1890 : -

The political danger to-day in America is Jesfc this nation ahall degenerate into a plutocracy, and men ■■shall bo bought and sold at the ballot boxes, and the votes shall count for imney paid and not for deliberations deliberately forined-corruption, direct or indirect, through the payment of iioney, through theextendiug of favors >r through the abominable system wrought into our national fabric of uoldmg one hundred thousand and odd offices to be fought over in every political campaign and paid down to the party that is the victorious one, uo matter how it win its victory. I hese ore the dangers that belong to a commercial and a money making com inunity, and they are the dangers that threaten America to-day. There is do danger from Caosaristn — there is a great deal of danger from plutocracy. The dangers threatening our industrial system are of the same sort. The gulf is growing wider and wider between the very rich, the few, and the many relatively poor. You may read side by side in the columns of the same uewspaper the account of the magnificent ball, the gorgeous array, the resplendent diamonds, the costly entertainment — and the history of the poor woman crazed with grief found. by the policeman wandering in the streets holding her dea&t^baby to her bosom, that has died fro;tn starvation, and she herself not willing to believe it is a corpse Bhe holds there.
