"What is the real reason of Emm's refusal to leave Africa? Though Stanley is taciturn as regards his own experiences, he does not object to unfolding those of Emm. In reply to a question put to him the other day as to the the true motive of Emm's refusal to leave Africa, he replied with a smile, in unaccustomed. French, " Cherchez la femme " ; and upon being pressed for an explanation he described in English, though with fervour which spoke of Oriental associations, the exquisite charms of an Arab belle, for whose sake Emm is about to plunge once again into the mysterious v depths of the Dark Continent. _ Perhaps the sad certainty that he will be blind in a year's time makes him cling to the presence of the one who if actually " the light of his eyes."
