THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE.

During a concert given in Dunedin on Friday evening, on behalf of the survivorß of the famous Bilaclava charge, Sergeant-Major Bdvin ascended the stage, where hiß appearance was the signal for a loud and prolonged burst of cheering, accompanied by the waving of hats and handkerchiefs. He aaid he desired on behalf of his comradeß to return thanks to so many of the people of Dunedin for ti.eir kindness in attending that evening. It was true that some of the survivors were in bad circumstanceß, but ifc was not true that upon the facts of the case becoming known recently the sum of £24 was all that was subscribed in Eni;l;md.at the first re«ponse, as the sum of £96 was colli-cted on that occieion, and in Mai. Chester fi.ur of the brigade were given £17 each as the result of a subscription that was got up for them. He would like to say on behalf of the Light BLade that they never considered they had done more than any other Boldiers would have dove if similarly situated.— (Uheen-). They never made any boast of what they did— the^ did whit they were ordered. The men were taking it vory quietly, sitting on the ground and smoking their pipes when they got the order to chargef and aome of them did not cea^e smoking when they m tuufced their horses — he did not for one — (Laughter and Applause.) Sergeant-nnjor Bavin then proceeded to give some reminiscences of the war in the Crimea, where ho landed as one of the first boatload, and, in conclusion, said he would write by the first mail to the chairman of the Balaclava Commemnioration Committee, telling him of the kindness of- the people of Dunedin in helping their distressed comrades—(Cheers.) He also desired to thank tho volunteer companies for the assistance they had given. He took that as an evidence of the existence of the freemasonry, which he believed would never die out, among soldiers of whatever description throughout the world — (Lnud cheers,)
