A CURIOUS STORY.

A Dalziel's telegram from Ottawa states ihat a gentleman named Vernon Smith, who died there, has left among hia papers an account of a narrow escape of Qu- eu Victoria some forty years ago, white he was divisional superintendent of a railway in England. Her Majesty's train, he says, broke down iv a tunnel. The Prince Consort and Mr Smith urged the Queen to get on to the tender and leave the tunnel. Her Majesty, however, refused to abandon her party, and Mr Smith ordered three fog signals to be placed near the Royal train to warn any trains from ap-pr.-juching. Shortly afterwards a heavy good* train entered the tunnel and passed over the first two fog signals, without noticing them. Finally, when the third signal exploded the driver stopped the goods train. The publication of this incident was, it is added, suppressed at the time.
