THE CRAMMING SYSTEM.

The following was contributed to the 'Birmingham Mail': — I cannot help sympathising with a certain teacher in one of the A ston Board schools, whose mistaken kindness had a very different termination to what was expected. The examinations were approaching, and in order to induce the scholars to exert themselves to their utmost, so as to secure the maximum grant, a promise was made that if they did well each should be regaled on the morning of the examination with sweets, cocoanuts, biscuits, and other indigestible?!, whicii are so dear to the hearts of children. "With the prospective treat in store, the youngsters did their best, and so saoisGed was the teacher that shortly previous tt) the visit of her M-.jesty's inspector she fulfilled her promise and supplied her charges with the sweets, &c. Tbe effect of this indulgence soon made itself apparent. One by one the children began to complain of feeling ill, and singly and in pairs the children were sent home. When the time for the examination arrived the attendance was palpably reduced, and the unfortunate teacher, instead of securing a substantial gnnt, had the mortification of knowing that ■he result was far beJow that of any previous year. The lesson has had its effect. However much the teacher may cram the minds <f '.<?r scholar*, she vowti she will nev - •*Ae:H "Au>t p ocess io another p^rt of th ir aua*omv, not at least till after the < xaniuer has left tbe school.
