I protested that I only drank water, whereat the Prince seemed astonished beyond measure, but said nothing. But when he had emptied his own, he slowly drank the one intended for me. Shortly afterwards, two large pipes were brought in, filled with tobacco. The Prince lit his own, and handed the other to me. ' Your Highness,' I observed, ' many thanks, but Ido not smoke.' 'What I' exclaimed Bismarck, rather impatiently. ' You don't drink and you don't smoke ! What sort of a man are you, then?'
