BISMARCK IMPATIENTLY WANTS TO KNOW.
A correspondent of the ' Roma ' says that Siguor Crispi related to him the following anecdote : — " During my fi >st interview with Prince Bismarck at Friedrichsruhe, the Chancellor caused two enormous glasses of beer to be brought in, and invited me to drink the one placed before me. I protested that I only drank water, whereat the Prince seemed astonished beyond measure, but said nothing. But when he had emptied his own, he slowly drank the one intended for me. Shortly afterwards, two large pipes were brought in, filled with tobacco. The Prince lit his own, and handed the other to me. ' Your Highness,' I observed, ' many thanks, but Ido not smoke.' 'What I' exclaimed Bismarck, rather impatiently. ' You don't drink and you don't smoke ! What sort of a man are you, then?'
