MISCELLANEOUS EXTRACTS

Since the year 1871 the emigration from Germany comprised 1,769,297 persons, of whom 1,618,816 went to America. New South Wales claims to have led the van in the use of postage stamps, the earliest bearing date 1838, while tho first used in England were dated 1840.

An enormous fish, about twelve feet in length and weighing upwards of 1200 kilogrammes, was found by some fishermen at Brusc, on the French coast, entangled in some nets. Tho animal was dead, but, being considered still fit for human food, it was taken to the shore, the operation lasting fully eight hours. When opened the people who had crowded to the beach to see it were amazed at the sight of part of a man's body and legs, the feet only being missing, lying in tho stomach of the monster. On examination it was found that the man' must have been drowned some time before. The remains were taken to the cemetery for burial, but the fishermen, having cut up the fiah, sent it on to Toulon, where it was sold in the market.

According to Talmage the devil is the cause of influenza. Physicians will please take note of this discovery. The Brooklyn preacher says : — " Satan, who is the ' Prince of the Power of the Air ' has been poisoning the atmosphere in all nations. Though it is the first time in our remembrance, he has done the same thing before. In 1696 the unwholesome air of Cairo, Egypt, destroyed the life of ten thousand in one day: and in Constantinople in 1714 three hundred thousand people died of it. 1 am glad that by the better sanitation of our cities, and wider understanding of hygienic laws, and the greater skill of physicians, these Apollyonic assaultß upon the human race are being resisted. But pestilential atmosphere is still abroad ; hardly a family here but has felt its lighter or heavier touch." It is gratifying to know that man by his knowledge, gained through suffering and sacrifice, can lessen the effects of the work of Satan.

A DalziePs telegram from Shamokin (Pennsylvania) says : — Fifty Hungarian women were thrown into a river yesterday by a gang of angry miners, and were knpfc in the water until almost drowned. It is not improbable that some of the women will succumb to the exhaustion and exposure, as over a dozeu of them were carried to their homes iv an almost insensible condition. It seems that the women provoked the miners by following a custom alleged to be in vogue among the Hungarian peasants in Europe at this time of the year. The men are supposed to bathe at Easter-tide, and by way of a hint as to the necessity of such ablutions, the women threw water over all the men they met during the day or two after Easter Sunday. This led to retaliation on the part of the miners, who are of mixed nationality.
