THE COUNTY ADVERTISING.
To the Eduok. Sir, — In reply to " Ex- member of the Tokomairiro Road Board," I may inform him that it was the legacy which ex-mem-bers lef b the ratepayers in the shape of a £500 debt which caused me to move the amendment which he complains of. To my mind, there are only two ways of overcoming the debt, viz., by curtailing expenses, or by a special rate. Now, Sir, I think the landowners have burdens enough without imposing a special rate. My reason for asking the Chairman the question I did was because if we were compelled to advertise in a local paper, seeing there is only one, there was no use calling for tenders. If I understood the Chairman, he told ub we were paying four shillings per inch for advertising, which I believe is a shilling more than the general public are paying. Me the last part of " Ex- member's " letter, it is the intareLt of the ratepayers and not the Bruce Herald's I have to study. In future I will treat all anonymous correspondents with silent contempt.— l am, &c, E, M. Duthie.
