PUBLIC MEETING AT INCH CLUTHA.

On Monday evening last a meeting of the Ratepayers of the district of Incb Ciutha w;is held in the Drill shed for the purpose of considt riug the question of the direction of the road line. About 70 persons were present. M. M >sley was elected chairman, and of course inflicted on the andience a very long speech, in whicb he stated he had discovered in goin? through the Matau Road Board books lately, that the Island had been t efrauded out of between £400 and £500, which he intended the Island should have. In addition to this they would have tbe road rate, amounting to about £150, and £2500 from the Government. With this money aud the help of God the Island would speedily be put in a more prosperous state than ever. Mr J C Anderson proposed " That this meeting disapprove of the County Engineer's suggestion to close up the river bank roads and construct ano -her through private property ; and that the old road be kept open instead." He stated that the settlers of the district were willing to give land so as to reinstate the road to its former width, and that tbey would help to protect the river baa Us, if aided by the Council. The motion was carried. A deputation was then appointed to wait upon the County Member so as to strengthen his case before the Clutha County Council in respect to tbis matter. The following gentlemen form the deputation, viz : — Messrs G Gilroy, J C Anderson, George M Donald, and Thomas M'Donald. Mr W Misley then proposed that three hearty cheers should be given for Mr Macandrew for his assistance in getting the loan from the Government. The meeting did not enthusiastically respond to this invitatioa. •• . The usual vote of th ks to the Chairman concluded the business.
