VOTING AT SCHOOL COMMIITEE ELECTIONS.

Mr Sydney Jauea, the Secretary to the Dunedin School Committee, has handed to us the following opinion of tho Attorney General ia reply to two questions submitted to him by the Committee : — The questions put to me are : (1) Whether a voter at the election of a school committee should state the number of votes he gives for each candidate ? and (2) if a voter votes for one candidate should his vote be counted as seven votes or only one ? I am of opinion that as to the first question the reply should be yes, and as to the second question I am of opinion that unless the number of votes is placed after each name the voter should only count one. For example, supposing a voting paper is in this form — "John Smith." — I am of opinion this should only count one vote for John Smith. If a voter desires to give John Smith more votes he should add the number after hia name, as "John Smith, 5." (Signed) irtOBERT Stout. January 25 th, 1879.
