GEORGE JOHN WHYTE MELVILLE.
The following notice of the career of this popular writer, whose death by an incident in the hunting field is recorded iv the latest mail news, is supplied by " Men of the Time " : — Melville, George John Whyte, eldest son of Major White-Melv lie, of Mount Melville, near St. Andrews, Fifeshire, born in 1821, entered the army in 1639, became Captain in the C >ldstream Gua rds in 1846, and retired in 1849 ; joined the cavalry of the Tuik sh contingent in 1855, and resigned at the close cf the Crimean war, in 1856 He*is known as a popular writer of fiction, and, amongst other w^ks, has written ' Captain Digby Grand,' an autob ography, 1853; 'General Bounce, or Lady andthe Locusts,' 1854; 'Kate Coventry, an Autobiography" 1856 ; * The Interpreter : a Tale of tbe War,' 1858 ; ' Holmby House j a Tale of Northamptonshire,' 1860; 'Gjod for Nothing, or All Down Hill,' 1861 ; ' Tilbury Nogo, an Unsuccessful Man,' 1861 ; 'Market Harborough,' lß6l ; 'Gladiators: a Tale of Borne and Judea,' 1863; Brookes of Bridlemere,' 1864 ; ' Cerise : a Tale of the Last Century,' 1865 ; ' Mor N,' 1869 ; ' Contraband, ora Losing Hazard,' 1870} 'Sarchedon,' 1871 ; «Satanella:a Sfcery of Punchestown,' J872; •The True Cross : a Lpgend of the Cburcb,' 1873; ' Uncle John.' 1874; and ' Katerfelto : a Story of Exmoor,' 1875. Hehas also published & translation of the Odes of Horaoo and a volume of 'Songs and Verses,' 2nd edit., 1872,"
