"The Custom returns for the year and last quarter are published*. The total Customs revenue for December quarter was £316,831, as against £302,792 in corresponding quarter;. of. th**) previous year. Total for 1878, -fi 1,344,944, as against £1,213,479 in 1877. The chief itema of J revenue of the several ports, during the quarter yere:— - Spirits— Auckland, £13,948 ; Wellington, £3075; Lytte*toD, £163.01 d; Dunedin, £21.655. Tobacco-AAuckland; l £6215 ; Wellington, £4303; Lyttelton, £461.0 • j DunediD, £8863. Tea— Auckland, £1582; Wellington, £1558; Ljtteiton, £1833 ; ! Dunedin, £469. Sugar and molasses — Auckland, £5327 ; Wellington. £4253 ; | LytteltoD, £5170; Dunedin, £7519. Ad valorem duties — Auckland, £13,885; Wellington, £11.595 ; Lyttelton, £l3,7l7; DunediD, £32,115. In Decemher there was a considerable i increase in the number of deaths ag eomparee with November, tlie deaths having risen in number from 89 in November to 132 in December. The deaths in thts" boioughs (with exception of Invercargill) amounted to 106. Ofthe six deaths from ! typhoid fever, two occurred in Auckland, three in Cbristcburcb, and one in Duae*> din.
