INCIDENTS OF THE FLOOD.
M Stirling Mr Malcolm M'Kmlay's house ws carried away, Messrs Horn, Roy, and Go's. st<re has been for the last week several feet urder water, and the loss to that firm, must be vey considerable.
A.t Balclutha yesterday, Mr Finlay, Manager foi Mr R. B. Williams, had a very narrow escape from drowning. Mr Finlay left the Crawn Hotel on horseback, for the purpose of ascertaining whether a coach coald go south along the main street. On reaching a point oppoate Mr Nichols' newshop, both horse and ridsr disappeared into a deep hole in the middle of ibe street. Mr Finlay was carried by the current against a dray in Messrs Galloway and Dreiinan's yard, where he had to remain over an hour before a boat took him off. Hiß horse managed to get out in a different direction. Mr M'Kenzie having made a,hole in the roof of his Souse, was in the act of constructing a boat with the strongest rafters of his house when another boat came to the rescue; His own was very aearjy finished, and besides this he had made a desparace attempt to get along the telegraph wire*, but fouud he was usable to attach a rope to them. It was a plucky rescue of Mr Legge on Tuesday by Mr John M'Neil, who had great difficulty in. getting a boat for the purpose. An offer had been made to convey him to a place of safety before, but this ho had refused, preferring to stick to his house. The barn and stable on the lioaaeatead of Mr Harv-jy on the island were carried out to sea on Wediiesday afternoon, without a moment's vrai'Diag, the foundations of the building, about forty feet long having been thoroughly sapped. Mr Harvey is thus "not only the loser of his building but of a larger quantity of valuable agricultural machinery all of which, were inside the barn at the time.
