THE MELBOURNE CUP RACE.

On. the. Melbourne Cup day the course presented' a "grand sight. There were present, at the l.o west estimate, 80.000 per--nonn, arid Of these ''nearly 4G,000 irave'led by rail. The wet weather prevented a large attendance of Indies. (The race was a splendid one. Fillibuster, Fisherman, and Savanaka niade the most of the running, Chester being kept well to the front. At the last half mile Chester disposed of his horges one by one, but Savanaka made a grand pußh at the finish, and nearly caught Chester. He only won by half: a length; in .3mijtt ; i33^secß, the fastest time yet made. The bookmakers lost heavily, but not so much as if Savanaka had won, as he carried a lot of money. The running was very true, and the order in which the -horses finished after Chester was Sa. „ Tanaka, Vagabond, Tom ,Kirk, Glenormißton, Woodlands,. PJuto, and Amend— , ment. The racing generally for the other events was very good, and some extraordinary fast time was made. Talk of the Vale ran a mile and a half in the Maiden Plate in 2min-42^ec, carrying 9si, which is a better, performance than Chester in the Derby at 2min -iSsec. THE CASTBBBDKY DERBY, IB79. The winners of the Casarewitch tb'B year are still' covered with mystery, though Hilarious is the name which most resembles the bungled word transmitted by cablegram. The D iredin Spring Meeting has a fair number and quality of horses eniered. Mr Delamain has entered Parthenopoß'iß and Obaron, and Mr Beeves has entered Chancellor, so that, with Cloth of Gold and other local horses, the citizens have a promise of a good day's sport on St. Andrew's D*yAlready bookmakers have opened books on the Auckland Summer Meeting The weights ?re not out, but it seems that Hippocampus is a, great favourite. Of course, nearly all depends on-what he has to carry, but at present there are few who will' lay against him " straight," though odds can be got against him and another for the double event. The nomination* made on Saturday night for the Wellington Cup and t>unedin Cup, Publicans' Handicap, Duned'r. Jockey dub Handicap, and Dunedic Champagne Stakes (1879) are muct larger than on any previous occasion. The Canterbury Cup was won by i Hawke's Bay owned horse— Messrs Wat! ajl4 Farmers Ariel, entered )U M.r Far

mer's name. Thiij is the largfst racing event in the colony, the stake* being £500 added to a sweepstake of £20 each horse accepting. The programme for tHe. Palmerstou Annual liace MeKtin^, wh'ch i« announced to take place on JSTew Tears't* Day, has been issued. Prominent amongst the events are the Pulmerstori .Gup (Handicap), of 80 soys ;- the Shag Valley Handicap, of 40 soys ; and the Maiden Plate, of 30 soys. Four other itema are mentioned, and as the Club offer about £250 to be competed for, it i* confidently expected that on New Year's Day, 1878, there will be a number of first-class horses on the; ground/ a large public attendance, good raciug, and a thoroughly successful meeting,"" The -Wellington' Cup has the very beat entry that has ever been made for any race in New Zealand, forty-eight being the number, and after the handicap comes put and half of them pay up we may expect to see- a very good race. We miss the veteran Guy from the entries, but as .he at preseut bas ; a, leg, it no doubc was iih ought prudent' not to enter him. "Nunquara Dormio" writes in the Auckland ' Herald * •— On going out to Bpsom the other day I was hi»hly pleased to see as fine a colt foal by the, imported horbe Feve from Ca ptain , Wai msley's weW-known mare Moonbeam, as I have seen for niany a long year. He is a wonderfully good one, pientyof size and bone, like his l sire, eyery inch a gentle-^ man, and brimful! of quality. Not only is his owner to be congratulated upon possessing uudpubtediy the best bred colt that has ever been dropped in the Australian Colonies, but it is a subject of congratulation to. all sdmirera , of tborouglibrfd stock, to know that in Auck land we haye such blood as w.ould be .eagerly competed for even in England at the present moment. Money cannot buy anything better or more fashionably bred, and what is perhaps not of least importance, of more ruuniog blood. Extreme prices are now being offered at home for horses of the same blood as Feve (the sire of this colt). Anything, from-' Lord Clifden'H blood, from tiie wonderful way which hia stock has been running, command extreme prices; and yet some of the Auckland people who profess themselves judges of horses allovved thi« miignificenily b^-ed animal to leave this provine'e for Sydney, where, although thoroughbred sires are a drus, he was at once at a high price engaged for three years^ since which letters ha»e been received from England offering a handsome profit on his original cost, and all expenees for both journeys, should his owner wish to part with him. At the sale of Mr Fisber's Maribyrnong yearlings, 28 lots reali-«ed 12,515 guineas, giving an average of 447 guineas each. The highest price paid was 1000 guiueas for a grand filly, by the Marquis out of Sylvia.; The Beefton Jockey Club race programme ia issued for the 26th and 27ch Dfccember. Aggregate stakes, £475 ; ciip, 120 soys. ; two other handicaps, 65 soys. each ; two hurdle races, 30 soys. each. P --■ ■";■ '■■ ■■• ■ •■■ - ' "" ; '■ ■'' ' .
