Mil ton Volunteer Fire Brigade.

« A general meeting of the Brigade was held at the White Horse Hotel last night, Captain Fred. Bastings in the chair. MINUTES. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. correspondence. The following letter was read, and held over until next meeting for consideration, with other letters on the same subject : — Dear Sir, — Some little time ago we received an account of £11 16s, signed by you, being for men's time engaged at the late fire at Mr M'Laren's stables. We have already paid £8 18s for expenses at said fire. We do not know who engaged them, and really cannot understand how the expenses connected with this fire have been so great, or in what way so many men were working for days in the interest of fche Insurance Companies. We have submitted the account to the National and Victoria Insurance Companies, but they will not recognise the claim as a just one. If you, however, as Captain of tho Brigade, are aware of any special case of meritorious conduct on the part of anyone you might kindly let us know, and we will bring it before the Insurance Association in tlie usual form, and it will, we have no doubt, receive its careful and indulgent consideration. We are really sorry we cannot give any other answer to this application, especially as we have just had a note from one of tha men engaged at the fire, in which he says he is very much in need of the money. But, were we to acknowledge the justness of this claim, there would probably be no end to such demands. Yours faithfully, Gillies, Stheet, and Hislop. Mr Bastings, Milton. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were passed for payment : — W. Lockhart, 7s 6d ;W. Taylor, 19s Gd ; J. Cunninghame, 6s ; Joseph Mackay, £1 18s 3d ; Soutter and Gray, 3s. DONATION. The Captain reported that he had received a donation of £2 from Mr J. E. Brown, agent for the New Zealand Insurance Company. It was decided to acknowledge the receipt of the donation with thanks. The roll having been called, the meeting closed.
