The following letter was read : — Milton , May 22nd, 1876. "We hereby request, you to rail a special meet* ing of the Tokomairiro Road Board, to take into consideration the resolutions of the Board at its last meeting relative to the retirement of tha member for Helensbrook Subdivision, to be held ou Monday, 29th May, at 6 o'clock p.m. (Signed) Feed. Twiss. Thomas Dall. Geohge Lindsay. To George Cnpstiek, Clerk of Road Board. On the motion of Mr Murray, seconded by Mr Tweedie, it was resolved that legal advice should be taken on the subject. THE COAL ROAD. The following report was read : — Tokomairiro, 26th May, 1876. Gentlemen, — I have examined the Coal Road metal contract. It is muoh cut up by the heavy traffic ; but from the portions still retaining their form, I think the quantity specified has been put on the roadline. The preseut condition of the roadline is evidently owing to no care having been taken to retain the metal in form, when rutted by the very hoary trnffio, by filling in the tracks, and thus allowing the whole to fail into a single line of track. No amount of metal put upon a new formation could have prevented this unless taken care of, and the contractors could not be held responsible for this unless special provisions had been made, and they had been authorised to keep the traffic off the metal until passed. Some side slips have fallen, and are blocking up tlio side ditches. These raquire to be cleared away at once. In repairing the metal, I would recommend that the ruts on a portion of new formation on both Bides of Mr Falconer's, and also a portion of deop formation.- near the creek up the valley, be filled with new metal of the very best quality — say, about twenty (20) loads. As for tlio remainder, it will require to be carefully filled with the metal now on the roadline and the watfi* taken ofl\ The best thing to do will bo to take what care can be clone of this roadline to carry it through the winter, and to take prompt steps in the spring to keep it filled up, the water taken ofF, and with the coming dry weather to have ib solidified into proper form. N.B. — The Board are awa\ % Q that owing to special circumstances I did not take in hand the inspecting of this contract. I have, &c., James Elder Brown, Engineer to the Board. The Chairman and Members of Tokomairiro Road Board. Mr Murray proposed — " That Mr Brown's report be approved of, and that Up be instructed to get 20 loads of metal } as proposed in the report, and to otherwise repair the road." Mr Goodall seconded the motion, which was carried. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were passed for payment — Groves and Poley, £233 10s ; A. Wisely, £4. RETURNING OFFICER. On the motion of Mr Murray, seconded by Mr Thompson, Mr J. lilues was appointed returning officer for the Ileleusb'ook subdivision, iv place of Mr Dall, resigned.
