Waste Lauds Board.

♦ (From tlie ' Times ') An ordinary meeting of the Board was held on Wednesday. The following members were present : — The Chief Commissioner (in the chair), Messrs Bastings, Butterworth, Clark, and Strode. COAL LEiSE AT WAIKAKA. Messrs Stewart and Doughty applied, on behalf of Mr James M'Kenzie, for a seven years' license, under tbe 91st clause of tbe Act, to occupy section 29, block VI, Waikaka district, for tbe purpose of raising lignite. Ifc was resolved tbat the Ranger should report. PRE-EMPTIVE EIGHT ON RU."** NO. 1708. Mr Harris, on behalf of Mr W. Ibbotson, applied for leave to purchase 10 acres of land on a pre-emptive right on run 175 b, to secure shepherd's hut and yards. Ifc was directed that the Warden should report. PURCHASE OF LAND AT OTEPOPO. Messrs Connell and Moodie, on behalf of Mr T. H. Watkius, applied to purchase a small portion of land adjoining section 34, block L. Mr William Pacey applied for a seven year's lease of section 24, block 111., Chatton district, for coal-mining purposes. Rang, er to report. SALE OF LAND BY AUCTION AT HAVELOCK. Mr James Skinner requested that section 1, block XXV., Havelock, might be offered at auction afc the original price of £3 per acre, iustead of £5, the price having been altered since bis application to purchase. The Board resolved to adhere to their decision. WATER FOR MINING PURPOSKSMr James Ferguson applied for leave to take water f :>r mining purposes, nnder tbe fiofch clause of the Waste Lands Act, 1872, from Cooke's Creek, Waikawa. Survey to be submitted. MINING OPERATIONS AT WAIKAWA. Ranger Campbell forwarded a report on a letter from Mr Fitzgerald, informing of certain persons illegally occupying Crown lands afc Waikawa, and that dams and waterraces were flooding the land aud destroying the forest. Report read and received. APPLICATIONS TO PURCHASE. The following applications to purchase at £1 per acre were refused : — Thomas Burton sections 48 to 54 inclusive, block IT , Dunedin and East Taieri ; Samuel Herman, section 4, Upper Taieri district. ' APPLICATOIN OF MR n. MANNING. Mr H. Gunn asked the Board to ree insider its decision with reference to an application by Mr Henry Manning to purchase a small pavfc of tbe bush reserve adjoining sections 31 and 32, block 1. , Warepa di3criefc. It was resolved that the road should be 'reserved if tbe Chief Surveyor could rescind it ; otherwise the sale fco go on. ASSIGNMENT Oi" DEFERRED PAYMENT LEASES Mr Sincbir (Smith, Anderson, and Co ) requested the sanction of the Board fco an assignment of deferred payment leases 245, 246, and 248 from J. Leitchfield to Peter Harrington. Some of the Board expressed a fear that if they granted this application they would open the door to a great many more ; and, after discussion, it was resolved to decline the application. Mr Strode afterwards pointed out that no assignment under lease, or transfer of any license or lease, could take eff-rct or have any force or validity, either at law m* in equity, according fco the 7th section of the Otago* Waste Lands Acb, 1872, Amendment Act, 1875. OBJECTION TO SALE OF LAND IN WAIKAIA DISTRICT. Objections were received from residents at Switzers to the opening for sale of sections 2 to 12, block L, Waikaia district, on the ground that the land is auriferous and not suitable for 3g*/iculi,nye,

TAILING RESERVE AT WATKAIA. 1 Mr William Lawrence applied to purchase 20 acres of land, part of the tailing reserve adjoining block I , Waikaia district. Jt was] resolved that the District Land Officer should report. THE OCEAN BEACH SAND HILLS. A letter was received from the Municipality of St. ELilda, containing a request that the Board would grant ifc a lease of the Sand Hills at a nominal rental. It was stated that the Municipality wished to prevent the wholesale removal of sand, as at present the carters threatened to let in tbe sea. the members of tbe Board were of opinion that ifc would do good to remove some of the sand, and simply read the letter. POLTCE OFFICER FOR WAIKAWA DISTRICT. Some complaints were received from tho Ranger of Waikawa district with regard to tbe cutting and burning of timber in that district. It was resolved that the Provincial Secretary should be asked if be could allow tbo Commissioner of Police to send a Police officer to visit the district, and who would report respecting tbe desirability of stationing a Constable there. ToWN BELT AT LAWRENCE. Mr L. C. Holmes, for Mr James Sim, applied for a license to occupy half an acre of the Belt afc Lawrence, under the 91st clause of tbe Act, for brickmaking. Ifc was resolved to ask the Government to sectionise this parfc of the town for sale. QUARRY LT3ASE AT HAWKSBTJRY. A report was received from Ranger Valpy on an application by Mr John Valentine for a quarry lease of four acres of the Bush Reserve at Hawksbury. The following minute was recorded : — " Government already asked to sectionise reserve." LEASE OF BUSH RESERVE — KAITANGATA DISTRICT. Mr John Bruce applied for a ten years' lease of bush reserve, section 10, block 1., Raitangata District, for grazing purposes, at ls ncr acre per annum. It was resolved that the Ranger should report. The Board then adjourned till Thursday, May 25 th.
