THE MEMBER FOR TAIERI.

(To the Editor.) SrR, — I think the electors of the Taieri district, owing to the recent unsuccessful attempt their member for the Assembly, Mr Donald Reid, has made to sell several large blocks of land without submitting them to public competition, ought to call upon him to resign. It is well known that upon all occasions when seeking the suffrages of the electors both for the Council and the Assembly, Mi* Reid has expressed himself as totally opposed to the sale of our land in large blocks. The bitter fact should' not, however, be forgotten that Mr Reid was one of the Executive and a consenting party some years ago to the shameless sale of 50,000 acres of land to " big Clarke." It was then thought by some who were disposed to take a lenient view of the matter that it was only in a fit of desperation that the then Executive felt compelled to act, hence Mr Reid was forgiven ; but this last transaction outherod's Herod, and shows us that neither Mr Reid nor any of his party ought to be trusted. In fact, he has acted so much in direct opposition to the interests of the people that he ought to be asked to resign his seat, in order that a man of some political principle at least should be put in his place. Mr Reid does not appear to know the meaning of consistency, and this may account for the erratic way in which he has acted for some time past. There is sufficient time yet for a new election to take place before the Assembly meets. I am, &c, 9th May, 187 G. Farmer.
