The Bruce Herald. " Nemo me impune lacesset." TOKOMAIRIRO, MARCH 31, 1876.
We uuderst.ap.cj tbat Mr William Archibald Murray, the r,epr<3sejQ l ta47a pf Bruce in the. General Assembly, has disposed, of £,hg property lately owned by him iv this Prpvjn.ce. i Assuming this to be true, — and Aye have no ' jr.e^sotj to doubt the report, — the electors of this district ar«e #qw represented by a gentleman who has Jifetde .0? n$ jja.t.Gir^.st jn common with t'hettjj and who is the helper ( of .a flarge i tract of laod in the JJoijth Jsjland. Iv .the 1 present state of poMqaJ ; affa;irs, we d.p n^t regard our .exwffQjjf w\tims *yj4 tjpc k?w*
able member for Bruce as being at all satisfactory. If Mr W. A. Murray were a politician of acknoAvledged sagacity and undoubted influence in the House, and if it would be a difficult matter to find his equal among men Avhose interests are identical with those of this district, Aye might be content to overlook the fact that he has cast in his lot with those who may fairly be looked upon as our political enemies. We do not look upon Mr Murray as a man of even ordiuary ability, Avhile Aye have not the slightest hesitation in asserting that his influence over his felloAVmembers is simply of a soporiferous kind. There are several highly respected residents of this district Avho could represent us far more ably than our present member; and since his connection Avith those Avho elected him has virtually ceased, we are of opinion that he should be called upon at once to resign. During the late election, it Avas rumored that Mr Murray intended to reside in the North Island, and one elector asked him if he would be prepared to resign if he parted Avith his interest in the Bruce district. In reply to this question, Mr Murray said he Avould be prepared to resign Avhenever his constituents let him knoAV that he did not possess their confidence. We do not Avish for a moment to question Mr Murray's political integrity, for he is a man avlio is not likely to be exposed to many temptations Avhile in the House, but Aye are unable to express confidence that the interests of this district are not in danger while Aye are represented by a man Avho is a resident in the North Island, and Avho has identified himself Avith the party Aye have the strongest reason to fear.
