Mr Skbnk reports, under date November 16, as follows : — There are very few vrell-founded complaints of want of work at present ; certainly no old identity should be out of a job. There is a steady demand for people at all accustomed to country life ; and even town bred people, who have been long looking out for a start, can now get on if at all experienced at either desk or counter. Female servants, of tried experience, are as much valued as ever, and quiet unassuming girls, who know the routine of house work, get readily settled and high ■wages. Good men, for road and railway formation, are all employed, and the market is ready tor more men at any time, and excellent wages are offered. Quarry, tunnelmen, and briekmakers are needed. Ploughmen are Suiet at present ; and shepherds Bhould be on be runs ere this. Dairy hands, male and female, are much wanted — so many are disinclined to do such work. Wages for the past week ranged as follsws : — Female servants, from £26 to £36 ; experienced do, £36, £40, and £45; cooks, barmaids, &c, £Qs, 255, and 30s per week. Farm hands and shepherds, £55 to £65 ; couples, £75 to £90. Country* blacksmiths, £3 and £4 per week. Country carpenters, 36s per week and found. Day laborers, 9s and 10s ; for first-class men more money. x??YS and girls, for house or trades, from 6s to 10s*. Milkers, 15s, 20s, and 25s per week. Dairymen say it is best to give the last figure for a good than to run the risk of having their cows spoiled. Wool ■hearers are missing now, but they keep their counsel as to wages.
