Municipal Councils.

MILT OX TOWN COUNCIL. Wednesday, Novsmbeb, 11. Present : The Mayor, Crs Lane, Jones, Inglis, White, Henderson, ami Wilson. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. dayman's diary, A resolution had been passed at last meeting that the dayman should keep a diary of his work. It appeared that he had always done so, and the same was now laid on the table for inspection. WIDENING EDEN-STBEET. Mr Soutter's offer re the purchase of his land for widening Eden-street was taken into consideration. Cr Joues reported that since last meeting ! the Finance Committee had waited on a good | many people interested in the widening of i Eden-street. JSome persons had promised handsome subscriptions ; others had refused. Several whose property was in the immediate neighborhood of Eden-street thought that the widening of Eden-street would be beneficial to the whole town, and that therefore everyone in jJ4ih-on should contribute t# it. Considering- the benefit that would accrue to the town, and the liberality which, in his opinion r characterised Mr Soutter's offer; the probability also that if they delayed the land would increase in value, he was j prepared to propose that Mr Soutter's offer be accepted ; the £230 to be paid, £70 down, £Sft at the end of one year, and £&Cs at the end of two years, the t-»yo latter sums bearing interest at 8 per cent, per annum. As to the necessity for the work, he thought everyone was agreed. The money absolutely subscribed at present was £32, so that from a financial point of view no apprehension need be entertained by the Couucii. Mr J. E. Brown, who obtained th§ permission of the Council to speak, tb^n-ht that rates eiiould. not V«e used for iVarcbasing the land. Th.c revenue from tb-<; Municipal estate and, from publican* 1 Yicenses, &c, should be the source whencQ to meet such demands.

Councillor Jones thought that as West Ward had nut had anything like the sum of money raised in it spent jn it hitherio, it might well claim a share of the rates now to widen Eden- street.

The Mayor agreed with Councillor Jones, and said that they might expect £50 from subscriptions. Mr Soutter's offer had to be decided on to-night, or he would withdraw it and raise the price of the land. Councillor White seconded Councillor Jones' motion. lie had been spoken to in support of the purchase of the land by aereral heavy ratepayers. The Mayor asked if there was any amendment. No oue replied. He then asked those who were agreesWe to signify the same in the usual waj. It was asked what that way was, ayd ultimately Councillors Jones and White held up a hand each, v.-hereupon the Mayor declared the niotuxu carried.

Councillor Wilson protested, and said that the vweii against should have b%n taken. The Mayor said %& opposition had been raised, as no a.;xkeuohu.ent had been made.

( V.uucihor Henderson pointed out that tbe parties most iuterested m the of

Eden-street had not come forward to subscribe, whereas, half the amount required should have- given by them. Councillor Wilson agreed with this. A lengthened and somewhat desultory discussion took place. Ultimately, the - Mayor put the motion, when there voted for the motion Councillors Jones and White against Councillor Wilson. The motion was therefore carried. Councillors Jones, Henderson, and Inglis did not vote. IMPROVEMENT IN MOORB-STREET.
