TAPANUI

(From our own correspondent.}

The statutory meeting of householders for qhe election of a School Committee took placein this town on Monday evening. There was a good attendance. The retiring Committee, through their Secretary, read a very • satisfactory and interesting report, after which the following nine gentlemen were •unanimously chosen to act for the current year, viz. :- — Messrs John Patterson, John Howat, John Mackie, Daniel Robertson, •John Edgar, Alexr. Macgregor,' A, F. Mackenzie, Key. Mr Bett, and James Crawford. ' The newly elected members held a meeting -afterwards, at tfhich some minor business was transacted.

There is e^ery probability of our having the services of a permanently settled minister •secured soon. The Clntha Presbytery is to meet here in a fortnight, when a call to Mr Bett will be moderated in. A most unanimous and harmonious feeling prevails, and "much good will be done to the district by the - appointment. Dr. Brown, of Edinburgh, has = also been practising in the neighborhood for six or seven weeks, and has already raised for ■ himself a very high reputation for skill and pbility. In connection with thi? matter the five following rnnholders have contributed most praiseworthily : — Messrs M'Kellar, Poynter, Mintyre, Logan, and Captain M'TCenzie.

Our cricket club still continues to practice diligently. They have effected great improvement lately,- and play very well together "now. Before the season ends I am sure a pretty tough-to-beat eleven could be picked ' out. I understand a match is to be played -at Switzers" shortly, when their powers will be tried.

The Pi ogress Committee, of which nothing has been -heard for a long time, has. again "'begun to act. The Secretary received a letter the- 'other day from the Government, • stating that a sum of LSO will be given to make the main street through the townsh i p, } provided an equal amount is raised in the district. I hope the district will bestir itself, and contribute this small sum. and so ac- ' comphsh a work which will add to the ap pearance and comfort of the town, and ma••terially enhauce the value of almost every .property in it. At the last fortnightly meeting of the Loyal ' Tapanui Lodge the new officers were duly installed, and took their places. They are ias follows :— Bro. Neish, G.M. ; Bro. Keir, KG.; Bro. M'Alister, V.G. , and Bro. ■Kilgour, E.S. The crops are but indifferently well spoken - of. An early harvest is looked -for. Things i are very quiet.
