iMr Taylor, Sub-Inspector, visited Hillend School on Tuesday last -quite unexpectedly. Aigood many of the eldest of the pupils were absent owing to the present -haymaking saaso'n. There were 26 ' pupils present. Notice not having been given in sufficient time to acquaint parents and'pfchers,.the examination of| the. scholars, took place in presence of the, chairman of tlie^^ School' Opmiiiittee only. A ! thorough examination, however, was made of the pupils- in the various, branches, studied during. th6 : iast twelve months^ 'Mr Taylor expressed himself highly satisfied with the intelligence and progress that the children had made in their studies, and was much pleased in their jn-pficiency especially in fcheir reading and aritlimetic exercises. .
;The annual election of School Committee took place at Hiilend School last Monday. ; After the usual preliminaries, the chairman, Mr David Bower, said that the thanks or the meeting shoiifd be conferred to Messrs Stewart and r 6row, Balclutha/Couperthwaite, and others, who subscribed" so libei'ally towards the prizefund for. the children, and also to' the gentlemen who tp6k an active' part, in the examination held bri r tlie29th u1t.."l 'Mr' Bower's proposal was unanimously carried. ..;' \ ' . The following gentlemen were then elected' as members of School Committee fur the ensuing , year ': — Messrs David Bower, John Henderson, Matthew Marshall, * Alexander King, John Nelson.
