Dated this 6th day of March, 1871. | GEORGE STEWART NEISH, Returning Officer. The following are the Polling-placea for the Electoral District of Mataura : The Schoolhouse, Tapanui The Schoolhouse, Mimihau The Schoolhonse, Tutarau Dated this 6th day of March, 1871. GEORGE STEWAUT NEISH, Returning Officer. ~~T~O T^H E ELEC TO R S OP THE CLUTHA DISTLRICT. /">< ENTLEMEN,— I should like through the medium of your journal to thank my numerous Friends for the extraordinary amount of support they honored me with throughout the Clutha District during the late Election, and also to make a few remarks regarding the said Election. I came into the field a new man, with the slur upon me of being a squatter, at the eleventh hour, to oppose the two old members who have represented the District for many years. The result of the contest was, I was beaten by six ; but four of my supporters at Balclutha did not arrive at the polling booth till after 4 o'clock, and six of my supporters at Port Molyneux never reached the polling booth at all — by the kind arrangement of one or move of ' ' my friends." Consequently Ido not think we can consider this altogether a defeat, although I am not one of the members for the Clutha. That I should have got the support I did at Balclutha and Inch Clutha, is not so surprising, as I am known personally to many of the Electors, and have a number of intimate friends in the neighborhood ; but that I should have topped the poll at Wairuna rather surprised me, as I only knew one gentleman resident in the district the night I addressed the electors there. I take their confidence as a great compliment, and even should I never get into the Provincial Council, I shall always have a warm heart to Wairuna. In conclusion, I can inform my friends that, far from being dispirited with my defeat, I intend to contest the first vacant seat in the Provincial Council that may occur in this part of the Province. The Poll was declared at the Courthouse, Balclutha, on Tuesday, the 21st March, at U am. I had hoped to have seen the successful candidates put in an appearance, to thank those who had supported them, but I suppose those gentlemen were engaged with something of more importance. Again thanking the Electors for the generous and enthusiastic support awarded by them, under the peculiar circumstances of my late candidature, I am, Gentlemen, Your obedient Servant, DAVID MAITLAND. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE CLUTHA, /^ ENTLEMEN,— Being unavoidably absent at the Official Declaration of the Poll, I take this opportunity of tendering to you my most sincere thanks for the high honor you have conferred on me, in again returning me as one of your representatives in the Provincial Council. I can assure you that nothing shall be wanting on my part to endeavor to merit a continuance of your confidence, by devoting my best energies to the interest of the Clutha District, and that of the Province generally. I am, Gentlbmen, Your Obedient Servant, DONALD HENDERSON. TO THE ELECTORS OF CLUTHA. i~l ENTLEMEN,— I thank you sincerely for again returning me as one of your Representatives to the Provincial Council. I shall do all in my power fo advance the interests of the Province, and specially the interests of the Clutha. I remain, &c, ( JAMES W. THOMSON. Port Molyneus, 27th March, 1871. i
