INVEHCARGILL.

(Yrom Our Own Correspondent) (Unavoidably held over from our last.) The week has been wholly taken up with politic* and political ga r hennas* The nomination of candidates for the Mouse of Assembly came off" yesterday, when the gathering 1 whs considerably less than has been usiiiil at such times. Three candi dates wf-re proposed, Mr M'Clure, (whom f mentioned as intending- to stand), Mr Ctildei', (some time in the field), and Mr George Lumsden, who yielded to a requisition got up the previous evening-. Mr Calder on the hustings, g-ave a qualified measure of approval to the Public Works and [mmioTafion Act. Mr Lumsden accepted it in its enlerity, and Mr M'Olnre, who was also an approver of <he scheme, reared from the contest in favor of Mr Lnmsden. As the [toll is to be taken on Tuesday we have nor long lo wait for the decision of Ihe electors, but I shall be deceived if the result is nor in favor of Dalder. Mi* Lumsden will, however, show respectability on the poll, and his friends appear moderately confident, of his election , [Living obtained f he ballot, the next thing' lor electors to do is to carry out the principle of the ballot and to abstain from the stupidly absurd system of pledging themselves either in the w;iy ot lequisition or otherwise. As the matter now stands, there is as much of canvassing, touting and e'ectionering tactics as before and unless we are lo suppose an extensive departure from moral principle in th^ actual deposit in the ballot box, the result of thi< election mar be very safely predicted bef >re it comes off.' Mr M'Giliivrnv and Mr T. 0. Low are actively engaged, and the-el<\-!ion for : he Riverton district will be si-or'ly contested ljutli i^:irleine.n have fh n ir 'im j nvtry vv-fiil occupied with addresses to electors, and the custotnery preliminevieS Mr Denniston has made bis bow to several audiences of Mafaura electors, and has been well received. It is confidently asserted that Mr Bell will be personally in the field before the election takes place. The election for the Provincial Council for the Riverton district is asnming an importance on this occasion which dofis not ordinarily attach to such an event. The contest, is not between men of different sides of politics or even of different shades of opinion, but between men who have worked in concert and who jointly fought the re-union battle. There is much bitterness imported into the contest, and the probability is that the circum stances of it will lead to a long estrangement between many who but for this cause might have worked harmoniously for many y°ars in the pubjic service. Tt will be admitted that, the principle of private arrangement with respect to representation of a district is altogether wrong, but it does not apply here, as Mr Daniels had been requested by an overwhelming majority of the constituency to represent them, and Mr M'Gillivray ought not to have consented to be made the tool of a faction, and to have entered Hie list against one whom he knew possessed the confidence of the district. Daniel's return may be confidently predicted. The trade ot the week has been very quiet, although a large quantity of wool has come down, but little in the way of stores has been returned. The crops, especially on the flats, are looking generally well, and in so no districts may be reported as very good. Garden produce was never so abundant as now. Within a few years back it was customary to import crates of cabbages from Victoria, imd even Tasmania. I think I am not wrong in saying that on one. occasion a shipload of cabbages was introduced from tbe latter colony, which paid well as a venture. High prices could then be had for the imported article, while now we grow so many tbat they are unsaleable. The present season is, however, an exceptional one, for, save a little frost, all the conditions for growth and perfection have been this season realised.
