Republicans from Onteiro destroyed the much-revered image of the Lady of Lourdes in the neighboring village of Assentis. Two thousand Catholics then marched into Onteiro, and in a fierce fight five persons were killed and. forty seriously wounded. The cavalry and infantry have been re-established by order of Parliament. The press is favorable to the Government's Bill legalising gambling, the opening of luxurious casinos in the chief towns, and the granting of licenses to the highest bidders. ' A British syndicate, with a capital of £1,000,000, has offered to build casinos in Lisbon and Cintra similar to that at Monte Carlo.
