HON. JOHN BURNS.

Press Assn—By telegraph—Copyright LONDON, June 19. In the House of Commons, during a discussion in Committee of Supply on Local Board salaries, Mr Asquith urged that Mr John Burns, president, should be released from his pledge not to accept an increase. The Government considered the department should be on equality in this respect to the Board of Trade. The amendment of Messrs Lee and Smith, M's.P., that Mr Burns's salary remain at £2OOO was negatived by 159 to 13. Messrs Byles, Lough, and Seddon advocated a retrenchment instead of an increase in salaries.
