A SUGGESTION.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —I do not think many people will consider three conveniences, as was decided upon by the council last Friday evening, at all necessary. In fact, to put three of these things in the main street of a town, only the size of Dannevirke would be a thoughtless waste of money. The only place where there is any necessity for the expense is somewhere near the Post Office or Barraudstreet. If councillors really think one is necessary near the trees at the Recreation Ground I would suggest one of their number be appointed to sit on some post at this spot, and by watching form a mental calculation how many would be likely to use such a convenience were it there. I am sure he would have to conclude the necessity exists only in councillors' imagination. If the present council wish to leave a monument for themselves near the Recreation Ground let it be say a drinking fountain. This would be a boon and a blessing, and an ornament to tho spot. But a urinal would be a white elephant for the next twenty years. The- council has no right to spend ratepayers' money on a public convenience before it is needed. Thanking you in anticipation.—l am, etc., RATEPAYER,
